Collection: The Backward Vendor

The Backward Vendor is a London-based leather goods and garment brand founded by designer April Mai, operating out of a studio and workshop in Hackney. The brand is a reflection on traditional leather techniques and methods that are not as widely used as they once were — often disregarded in favor of mass production — and a homage to cultural and traditional heritage. Rather than looking to current trends, The Backward Vendor looks to traditional craft, traditional techniques, and the handmade process. The design concept is rooted in everyday life — work, leisure, travel, history, and the world around us. April uses only raw and naturally dyed materials across her clothing, bags, shoes, and home goods, and there is no uniformity to what she makes — goods may be produced only once or twice, dependent on the spirit of the moment and the materials at hand. Each collection is made with the purpose of guiding, informing, and introducing the art of the handmade — and the perfect imperfections of leather. The Backward Vendor is not interested in what is new. It is interested in what lasts.
