The best incense in the world is found on the island of Awaji, due to its favorable climate. For more than a thousand years it has been made here by the Koh-shis or Masters of Aromas, a tradition passed down from father to son. They alone perfectly master the four stages of production: the dosage of exclusively natural materials, precious woods, herbs, plants, vegetable resins, and perfume; the kneading of the dough, pressed and worked for a long time, then left to stand for two weeks to soak up the fragrance; the cutting of the dough, rolled into long, narrow ribbons, to the desired size; then drying in the west wind for three days before bundling the sticks.

Damp wood, incense, and freshly laundered linen, evoke for Sonya Park the typical smell of an old, wooden Japanese house from the neighbourhood of Aoyama. A North African city with Parisian overtones. Whitewashed Haussmanian facades, Persian blinds painted blue, overwhelming heat, a touch of sulphur in the air. From trembling arcades rise delicious perfumes of white campion, privet flowers, wild jasmine, and bitter orange with its acidic notes spiced with a hint of chili.

A perennial plant of the Iridaceae family, iris pallida is native to the Dalmatian coast (Croatia): pale in colour, often mauve, it grows in clusters from a rhizome. Known as the blue gold of perfumery, iris has an elegantly powdery, slightly sweet and finely woody scent. It is both powerful and refined, enveloping and comforting.

An intense and exhilarating fragrance of great sensuality. Originally from Mexico, tuberose, a herbaceous plant of the Agavaceae family, appeared in Europe from the year 1600. To avoid altering its fragrance, its flowers are still picked by hand today. Its fragrance is considered one of the most powerful in the plant kingdom. Tuberose is a flower of love and intense sensuality: fruity and honeyed, almost narcotic, its scent is that of skin and ecstasy.

Of Gardens is an ode to Francis Bacon’s eponymous 1625 essay, a paean to the pleasures of a garden ablaze with flowers. It is a bouquet of citrus and floral scents: top notes of bergamot blend with lemon and neroli, which mingle in turn with a base of musk and sandalwood; at its core lies a beating heart of orange blossom, jasmine, and tuberose, infusing it with an array of scents both subtle and intoxicating. In line with Bacon’s assertion that ‘there ought to be gardens for all the months of the year’, Of Gardens is timeless, with a simple loveliness that flourishes in both the throes of springtime and the frosts of winter.

Planted in the Arizona desert, surrounded by giant cactuses with amazing shapes, stands Tucson. Wander downtown, along streets lined by colourful houses. Crushed by the heat, take a break in the shadow of a mesquite, watered by a little glass of mezcal. Intoxicating scents of the Far West float in the air: lightly smokey and sweet aromas of wild grasses, parched wood, immortelle flowers, and red earth, burnt by the sun.
